Plastic Planet is the third album from Auckland three piece guitar band Shady Brain Farm. Recorded at Lonely Hawk Studio in Kumeu over the last year, and completed during lockdowns, this is the first vinyl release from Shady Brain Farm after two EP's and two albums were released online.
It was worked out that Shady Brain Farm have played together as a group off and on for the last 24 years now, with all members now living in the Norwest Auckland area of Kumeu, Waimauku and Muriwai Beach.
Chris and Ben were originally in Auckland Post Punk/Art Punk band East in the early 90's before starting SBF in an apple packing shed in the outskirts of Kumeu in about 1997.
Chris's basslines often provide the basis for their songs with the affected guitar floating over the top, and diverse influences pull at times from Larry Graham to Les Claypool.
Frontman Ben Furniss has been in many Auckland bands over the years including The Broken Heartbreakers, Superturtle, White Swan Black Swan and Surrealistic, as well the Furniss Brothers. He has a nice home studio in a barn on his farm in Kumeu where they record their music, (the recent Jeremy Eade/Galveston Demo Recordings were done there as well as the Mellotron parts to Tiny Ruins Olympic Girls album).
Drummer Paul Taylor has had stints playing with Chris Baigent's River's Edge, Superturtle, Jeremy Eade and Goon. He lives in Waimauku Village.
Bassist Chris Vaughan has lived at Muriwai Beach for many years. He also collects and trades in Bass guitars.
Plastic Planet by Shady Brain Farm is due for release on Friday 26 March from all usual online sites. Vinyl orders are available from Bandcamp and Flying Out.
