Taylah’s highly anticipated new single Undies tackles gender norms and stereotypes in her unapologetic stance on Self-Love. Undies has been a femme-power project every step of the way, as Taylah joined forces with her choir of proud women/trans/non-binary singers, female bass-player Phoebe Johnson, and female sound engineer Nicole Hardie (watch BTS video here). The Wellington artist shares her message of identity and independence with her wahine/Takatapui army at her flanks.
Taylah speaks of her motivation for writing this single: “Being raised in a religious family, I have grown up with rigid gender roles and expectations, but I never felt authentic becoming the ‘wife’ or ‘home-maker’ type. I mean, why can’t I wife myself up?”
Undies is the anthem you’ll be belting out at home in your favourite raggedy shirt and fluffy socks, all by your own damn self. This song is not just for women, it’s for anyone who needs some boss b**** energy. We should be able to live the way we want, feeling safe and proud to do so. “If you’re thinking this just sounds like another feminist complaining about gender stereotypes. GOOD, I hope you’re listening this time.”
