Hot on the heels of Hummucide’s debut EP, comes the first track of their next project entitled Exothermic. Exothermic is a product of the global pandemic, and looks back at the power of energy being released during live performance that was missing during lockdown. Hummucide’s energy is a back and forth between audience and performer, and continuing in the jazz tradition their music is a product of conversations on and off stage. The song is an excavation of this feeling, in a time where these interactions were impossible.
This track is also a first for Hummucide, as it features long-time friend Luca Sturny on guitar. He was a natural fit for this project, and his soaring melodies and angular improvisation add another dimension to the composition. The feelings of isolation were quelled by the addition of another collaborator to this track. The art was created within the band; Ben took the photograph on 35mm film and Toby painted the characters.
Hummucide has quietly amassed a strong international listener-base, with the first EP gaining over 95k streams worldwide. During summer they played sold out festivals across Aotearoa including Twisted Frequency, Tora Bombora, and Welcome to Nowhere. It was a great privilege to be able to play these events as a part of a strong community of like-minded and inspiring musicians, and they have ambitions to play many more in 2021 and beyond.
Exothermic will be followed by a second single, and an EP due in August 2021. Some multimedia projects are also in the works. These recordings have all been self-funded up until this point from gigs, merchandise, and support from friends and whanau.
Exothermic will be celebrated with a gig at Parrotdog Bar in Poneke on
May 7th, with support by the amazing Revulva.
