2007 is shaping up to be a big year for independent label trade body Independent Music New Zealand, with many challenges for the music industry as a whole to face; and the newly-elected IMNZ Board is looking forward to facing those challenges, stamping its mark on the industry this year and spearheading some exciting developments.
At the IMNZ Annual General Meeting held in late April, two new Board members were announced to join the 6 incumbent Board members.
Phil Brökelmann of LOOP Recordings Aot(ear)oa and Andrew Maitai of Powertool Records were newly elected by the IMNZ member record labels and distributors.
They join Callum August (Dirty Records), Dean Cameron (1157 Records), Ben Howe (Arch Hill Recordings) and former Chair Bernie Griffen (Flaming Pearl records/Global Routes Distribution) who retained their seats.
Mark Kneebone (Tardus Music), who is also on the board of international digital negotiating body MERLIN, remains as IMNZ Chair. Joost Langeveld (Reliable Recordings) was voted interim Deputy Chair in late 2006 and he has now been elected officially to this post.
IMNZ extends an appreciative vote of thanks to outgoing Board members Steve Popham (King Music), Marley McGreevy (Elite Distribution) and Jim Pinckney (Round Trip Mars) for the work they have done for IMNZ. All three voluntarily withdrew their candidacy for this year, wishing to turn their focus to other enterprises.
Chairman Mark Kneebone says, “As we enter another exciting and challenging year for the local industry I think the independent sector is lucky that we have a representative group that comprises some of the smartest and most dedicated personalities in the New Zealand music industry. With a board of this calibre I am confident we will see another year in which the Independents will grow their market share and continue to be the backbone of Kiwi music.”
Deputy Chair Joost Langeveld commented, “This year my focus will be on strengthening and expanding independent music ‘communities’ and filling the vacuum left by the retraction of major labels from local A&R. Internationally it’s about consolidating our relationships with international trade organisations such as WIN and MERLIN, and on a local level it is essential to work towards greater exposure of independent music on NZ radio and TV.”
One of IMNZ’s major achievements over the past year has been the organisation’s role in the establishment of MERLIN, an international body set up to negotiate digital and new media licensing deals on behalf of independent labels worldwide. A deal with Snocap – the retail arm of MySpace – is a taste of things to come in this growth area.
IMNZ now has 66 member New Zealand-owned record labels and distributors. This is a far cry from the original 10 members who signed up at IMNZ’s humble beginnings in 2001. IMNZ’s membership covers most of the key independent labels and distributors in the New Zealand music industry. Members include Global Routes, Rhythmethod, Border Music, Jayrem, LOOP, Intergalactic Records, Arch Hill Recordings, Dirty Records, Tardus Music, Hellsquad Records and a wide range of others, who release by far the greatest percentage of New Zealand music each year.
