The first New Zealand Music Chart to include digital sales is now far more reflective of what fans are buying according to the Recording Industry Association of New Zealand (RIANZ).
RIANZ president Adam Holt says the introduction of digital downloads has made quite an impact on the Singles Chart.
“When you look closely there are some marked changes in this week’s chart that better reflect the current music scene in New Zealand,” Mr Holt says.
“Urban, RnB and Hip Hop tracks have made some big jumps on this week’s sales chart and that is clearly driven by digital sales, especially in the mobile phone platforms where that music is very strong.”
“For example T-Pain’s “Buy You A Drank” has debuted at number 2 on digital sales, backed by some radio airplay – that’s great, as it shows the chart is now more dynamic and more relevant to what fans are buying.”
Mr Holt says the new system also enables popular songs released only on albums to feature on the singles chart.
“Regina Spektor’s “Fidelity” is a case in point – people would have heard this song in advertising campaigns and Grey’s Anatomy and because they can download it as a single song, it has debuted at number 16 on The Chart. That’s good.”
