Tōrere has been released in line with Waiata Anthems Week. The te reo version of My Love, which amassed 550k streams on Spotify, was recorded at Roundhead Studios in Auckland and will be accompanied by a lyric video from the incredible
Māori Mermaid.

Taken from her 2020 debut self-titled EP, which contained the hit singles Vacant Cities, Never Had Love and My Love, the song was written a few years ago whilst going through a break-up.

“Break-ups are never easy, but this one, in particular, was painful and messy. The story ends well since I ended up marrying him - but at the time, the song was about the moment of realisation I had, where I didn’t want to live without him, whilst we were both trying to convince ourselves that we shouldn’t be together. All of this was happening while driving in my car following him on his bicycle down the road. No joke,” says Georgia.

She says “Having the opportunity to translate the song into te reo for the Waiata Anthems project has been a privilege.”

“Re-interpreting and Learning the song in Te reo Māori, was so special. One thing that I’m learning, is that in Te reo Māori there are so many different ways to say one thing, and all of those different words carry slightly different meanings. The language is poetic and beautiful and It feels like the new translation carries such a deep emotion to it, with the way it’s been translated.”

Watch what went into the process of making the song in this behind the scenes video.

Tōrere follows on from the recently released single Call Me By My Name released in July.

Georgia Lines has had a busy 2021 so far with the consistent releasing of new music, tours and shows (including an amazing support slot with Deva Mahal), playing at the inaugural Tuawahine show in Auckland to critical acclaim and recently singing the national anthem before the All Blacks and Wallabies Bledisloe Cup game.

There are plenty more good things to come from Georgia Lines.
