First Born is the debut EP of Poneke artist Nikau Te Huki, AKA Casual Healing. Written and recorded in the “C*H*u*R” Caravan Studio, the album was inspired by the Haputanga and Birth of Nikau’s son Uenuku, each song holding a loving truth for Uenuku to uncover as he navigates his way through life. This 5-track collection sounds and feels like a timeless golden sunset, with warm magenta and deep turquoise.
Inspired by the likes of Trinity Roots, Jeff Buckley, UMO, Portishead and Rage against the Machine, the music of Casual Healing is a modern blend of classic vibes. Nikau cleverly blends his wide variety of inspirations with a continuum of deep, moving grooves, clever instrumentation and powerfully emotive, equally whitty lyricism.
Green Tigers (Track 4) is a great example of the prowess and style of Casual Healing’s music. The beat was Inspired by Kiwi artist Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and the arrangement of this tune is simple and open, but punchy. The wairua of this song speaks to the melancholy of “surrendering to the unknown”, encouraging us to “let the wind carry us forward, instead of fighting its ancient currents.”
Black & White (Track 1) Is a bittersweet composition of warm, gospel-like vocal harmonies with a crunchy-distorted rhythm. Originally composed on a 1960 Yamaha Classical guitar gifted to Nikau on his 21st B-day by Uncle Azah.
The organic instrumentation of the album, combined with the more electronic elements, provides a feeling of Old & New and leaves space for the essence of each song to shine.
Following the release of Casual Healing’s flaming hot debut single & video Amble in November 2020 (produced by Tiny Triumph Productions), this EP is another outstanding example of Te Huki’s soulful & authentic songwriting genius, while shining the light on his prolific abilities as a music producer.
The single Black & White is set for release on Friday 1 October, 2021.
The new EP First Born will be released on Friday 8 October, 2021.
