Rising indie-pop talent Jaz Paterson today releases her brand new single LA, off her soon to be released debut EP Ache. By crafting alternative pop beats with contemporary R&B vocals, the gifted Christchurch singer-songwriter juxtaposes light and dark themes to deliver her introspective and confessional style of music.
A catchy, beat-driven track of electro-coated synth-pop, LA speaks to the highly relatable and very human condition of wanting to run away from your problems - only to realise the futility of it all as Jaz sings, “it don’t matter where you are, if you’re running away from growing up”.

“It’s about being afraid to grow up, to face the reality of life, wanting to escape from everyday life and routines, the day to day people and places that surround me”, says Jaz. “It’s about realizing that even if I can jump on a plane and be somewhere “better”, all of the parts of myself I try to escape from are still with me. All of the messy, ugly, beautiful and good parts of me – are with me wherever I am in the world.”
LA has received new single funding from NZ On Air, and an accompanying video is set for release next Friday 19 November. Meanwhile Jaz continues to flourish under the guidance of Christchurch-based SOLE Music Academy, and as their current Artist Development student, was thrilled to be connected to record her new songs with Will McGillivray (Nomad) at the helm, producing.
To date, two singles have already been released off Ache - the intimately revealing track Lonely, and tender break-up song Ache. By using her music to help herself process the beautiful and painful parts of life, Jaz recites stories about the ups and downs of life in her early twenties, and hopes that the honesty and vulnerability in her music will help people feel connected and understood. “While the experiences that I write about are personal to me, they’re also very grounded human experiences, and my hope is that they connect with others.”
With Jaz’s music career starting to heat up, be sure to keep your ears open and an eye out for this up and coming new talent who is sure to capture your heart. Ache is due for release on Friday 26 November, so don’t miss out and get your ticket to see her perform live at the Wunderbar in Christchurch.
