Ōtautahi based Aotearoa Independents Collective, Capgun Corp are incredibly excited to present the second collaboration between Larry D & Flux the Cynic, Holey Moley.
The song is a raw sounding but thoroughly mastered hip hop track. Made up of Larry D spitting lyrical rhymes over a 90’s style boom-bap beat produced by Flux the Cynic. The track is set to come in first in a six-track concept EP Underground, which sheds light on the journey Larry D has taken through dark times and the steps he’s made toward finding the light. Being first in the lineup, Holey Moley was written whilst Larry D was finding his feet. He raps with a gravelly voice, using conscious but witty bars to express the emotions he was going through at the time.
Flux the Cynic is well renowned in the 03 hip hop community for delivering heavy and smooth beats. He comes in with an airy and gritty old school sound straight out of his MPC3000. His classic style punches snappy snares and booming kicks through the horns in the verse section, with elements then dropping out to open up the sonic space during the hooks. A local underground legend, anyone with even a slight interest in the local hip hop scene will recognize his prolific style in an instant.
Holey Moley shows elements of Larry D's previous work while also stepping into a new conceptual arena. The track finds a unique balance between pure rawness and high-quality production in a manner that you won't find in the current scene. The life influences that fueled the creation definitely include alcohol consumption, a desire to grow and removing the lid from his stores of potential. Raw, heavy, organic and humorous.
Larry D has been busy since his debut album, Thoughts released last year. Alongside the other members in Capgun Corp; TZ, Lonesome Carboy, Necrum Select and Sugar James, he has been playing regular gigs in Christchurch, plus a few out of town shows in Wanaka, Auckland and most recently, Twisted Frequencies in Takaka. As well as working on his new EP, he is also working together with the Capgun Corp crew on their debut album, which is set to be released sometime in 2022. The crew formed around a year ago and have bonded not only on the stage but as a group of mates. As old school style hip hop revivalists, they have been shown interest by a lot of the people who miss that sound. This being said, they have found a way to create this style with their own modern glaze and are continuing to hone in on a unique form of hip hop. Beginning to be acknowledged on the local airways, the crew has delivered multiple tracks that cracked RDU’s weekly ‘Te Ahi Top 10’, with three weeks at the #1 spot.
Heading into the new year, Capgun Corp is hungrier than ever. 2022 will feature several major releases from the crew, including Sugar James’s debut album Just Me, Larry D’s album 'Underground' and a full-length album from the collective. Additionally, the team will be releasing a bunch of other beat tapes and individual drops throughout the year. As far as gigs go, Capgun Corp has a few lined up in the next few months including the ‘Hip Hop Medley Volume 2’ at darkroom on January 29th featuring the full Capgun crew, The 03 Joint, Luis and some features from a couple of upcoming underground rappers. They also have their biggest event yet - a yet to be announced fundraiser in February at 12 Bar featuring a huge array of local hip hop talent.
