Rap artist Swizl Jager has released Isle Of View, a 100% Te Reo Māori song, with Auckland label Move The Crowd Records (MTC).
Isle of View is the first single from Swizl Jager’s upcoming EP Tongue of the Whenua, a ‘reo raps’ mix of urban music with tongue-in-cheek humour and hard-hitting lyrics. The artist is joined on the song by Rani Blake (of Maimoa Music). Legendary New Zealand producer SmokeyGotBeatz (SWIDT) created the beat.
Swizl Jager says the song is about being there for your friend when they get their heart broken. The single is evidence of the Auckland resident’s bi-lingual approach, background in heavy metal and ability to adapt and create a wide range of music.
The video which supports the release was directed and edited by Joe Hitchcock and is a local twist on a famous scene in the film O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Swizl Jager’s favourite movie. It features the talented Maaka Pohatu (from Wellington Paranormal) as the ‘blind engineer’, and brings a bit of humour to the song, balancing the lyrics, which are about heartbreak.
Born and raised in Tauranga Moana (of Ngāiterangi and Te Rarawa descent), Swizl Jager has had songs featured on a range of TV shows including Find Me a Māori Bride, Moko Aotearoa and This is Piki. He has performed live all around the motu and Australia, widening the reach of his music through the energy he brings in his live show performances.
The release marks a special moment for MTC as ‘Isle of View’ is the urban label’s first song in 100% Te Reo Maori.
