Hey Helen, there’s always One Love

In the wake of Prime Minister Helen Clark’s announcement that she will not attend next week’s Waitangi Day commemorations in Waitangi, the organisers of Wellington’s One Love festival have invited the PM to come party with them instead.

One Love: Aroha Tahi expects a crowd of around 15,000 people to Wellington's Hataitai Park to soak up sun, music and good vibes in the spirit of unity and peace – far away from the stress of politically-charged Waitangi Day events elsewhere.

"If Helen Clark is looking for a laid-back atmosphere and lots of people celebrating the national day in the spirit of peace and unity, then she just can’t go wrong with One Love for Waitangi Day," said Radio Active 89FM manager Dave Gibbons.

Mr Gibbons started One Love 11 years ago as an alternative to the divisiveness portrayed through the media on the national day.

"It's important as a nation to have a dialogue about injustices and our shared history, but what One Love is about is celebrating what brings us together as New Zealanders, not what divides us, and moving forward in unity.

"No one wants a face full of mud or to be made to cry, so we understand Ms Clark's apprehension about going back to Waitangi. There's no mud-slinging and no sad stuff at One Love, Helen, so we’ll reserve a nice patch of blanket space for you and some mates to enjoy the sounds, sights and smells of One Love."

International hip-hop / reggae artist J-Star (UK) lines up with Hikoikoi, new Wellington supergroup The Yoots (featuring members of Scribes of Ra, Fat Freddys Drop, Phoenix Foundation and The Constituents) and Hope Road. Radio Active DJs Danny Lemon, Ras Twig, Misteek, Spin Zero and Art Official support.

One Love 2008: Aroha Tahi, the annual one-day festival of sun, fun, music and peace is held on Waitangi Day, February 6; also Bob Marley's birthday. Entry for the event is $5, with a free 2008 Radio Active 89FM 'Active Card' included. One Love features a fully-licensed bar. No dogs, no BYO and no gang patches.
