Music News - 'Only Way Is Through' - New Single From ARIA

Brand new single Only Way is Through from ARIA releases today.
Only Way is Through was created in collaboration with ARIA’s close friend, Berlin-based neo-soul singer songwriter Noah Slee (Tau).
“It was the end of Summer, before the pandemic had crushed our hearts, and Tau (Noah Slee) and I were up north on a song writing getaway” shares ARIA. “We sat in the lounge, drinking red wine and Noah said - I’ve got the start to this song, do you wanna try and write to it? … Noah added some guitar and a drum sample and we recorded some blackbirds singing from out on the deck. I took the demo away from that weekend as a gift from Noah.”
Friendships were at the heart of this track, from inception to completion.
“I felt so held. With my dear friend for over a decade, Tom Broome, in his gorgeous new studio along with my most supportive music pals, bringing to life a song I wrote with one of my best friends, Noah. I felt proud that I had taken this gift from Tau and now it was shining bright. Passing through all these kind, collaborative hands, it had become a beautiful thing of its own.”
ARIA developed the song in collaboration with some of Aotearoa’s finest musician. “We workshopped the song for a couple of days before we recorded and this really elevated the song” says ARIA. “The instrumental contributions made my heart burst, they really elevated the song to a level that I couldn’t have imagined. Chip’s (Chip Matthews) bass line echoed smoothly by Abe’s (Abe Kunin) guitar made my knees weak. My fave girl band buddy, Esther Stephens (The UpDoos) giving straight velvet on BVs. Guy Harrison’s offerings on keys were phenomenal as usual, and Alex Freer had the drum groove down to a ‘t’ as well as bringing the ultimate percussion skills.”
Inspired by the music of Cleo Sol’s album Rose in the Dark and words from Robert Frost, in Servant of Servants “this is a song about being in love and not seeing eye to eye with each other” shares ARIA.
"Only Way is Through is about trying to find peace during conflict. If you let the adversarial, eye for an eye, template take over then each of you loses sight of your empathy for the other. We get ‘stuck in a game of defensive fouls’ rather than seeing one another as human to human.
Long lasting love takes work, it takes courage and an open heart and soul. You can’t be half hearted about it, you have to jump in the deep end and ride the waves.”
ARIA’s vocals have featured on acclaimed artists tracks like TEEKS and Noah Slee, but Love Songs Till Midnight sees ARIA step into her own light.
Only Way is Through follows the release of Glass leading into ARIA’s EP release Love Songs Till Midnight on April 22, 2022.
