Pōneke musician Darren Watson’s long-awaited new single Marion is out now. It channels 70's and 80's storytellers like Robbie Robertson, Tom Waits, and Randy Newman, which sit neatly alongside his well-established blues influences.
The music was recorded and mixed at his home studio Lamington Recording, in Ngaio, and mastered by Mike Gibson at Munki Studios. ‘Marion’ tells the story of the sad, early demise of a blues musician. Saint Peter greets him at the pearly gates, reads the rules of entry and asks for his life story. The instrumentation is a departure from Watson’s previous two albums which were largely acoustic guitar-led affairs. It features electric guitar, organ, bass, drums, glockenspiel, harmonica, and even tuba and trombone.
Earlier this year, Watson crowdfunded a music video through PledgeMe, which was then shot and edited in Ōtepoti by director Clive Copeman. The video is available in UHD on Watson’s YouTube channel.
