Alibi is the swirling new dance track + video from Taupō-raised, Auckland-based artist Roonie.
This catchy track releases feelings of being stuck and taken for granted in a relationship - before then breaking free. It’s the first single from Roonie’s upcoming debut four-track EP - which she co-produced with New Zealand producer Will Henderson - and is perfectly paired with a stylized, purply-pink-palleted, hazy nightclub video, filmed in Auckland’s Cassette Nine.
“It’s a bright, sassy and honest track, with slight undertones of satire and humour, particularly in the verses,” says Roonie. “The video is about being alone in a crowded place, and slowly becoming empowered in that space. It’s set in a club because I feel that clubs can have that feeling of a good time, but with undertones of confusion and regret - much like the end of a relationship.”
Roonie is the musical moniker of Michaela Pointon, whose vibrant, self-reflective music is all about expressing strength and confidence.
Michaela grew up performing at weddings, restaurants, and corporate functions. In 2019 she moved to Auckland to pursue a career in music as Roonie. She released her debut single My Heart in 2020, which charted on the NZ Hot Singles at Number 15 and featured on TV show ‘Mean Mums’. With a four-track pop-dance EP set to be released later this year, there is still lots more to come from Roonie!
