Shannon Matthew Vanya shares new single and video 'It Gets Better' feat. Lévyne

Shannon Matthew Vanya is the musical project of Shannon Fowler (he/him), a musician, producer and songwriter based in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland). Shannon Matthew Vanya's music conveys melodic cool, as he finely curates warm synths, snappy drums and funky bass into melancholic pop.

Today Shannon Matthew Vanya shares a new single It Gets Better, a track co-written with Mark Perkins (Merk) and featuring Lévyne.

"It Gets Better is a true earworm and finds its charm in detailing the ebb and flow of emotions.

"‘It Gets Better’ was written with my friend Merk (Mark Perkins)" says Fowler. "I had half a verse kicking round, I sent the groove to Mark in a little video, “yo what u think of this?” He had his studio just across the road, so I went over and we worked on it that afternoon."

"I finished it later in the week but realized it would be super cool if it was a duet. Almost like two characters feeling the same way but hoping things are going to work out. A couple of months later while catching up with my friend Lévyne (Sophie Bialostocki). I remembered the song and asked if she wanted to sing on it. She nailed it and really took it to a whole new realm."

‘It Gets Better’ comes with a music video shot on Super 16mm film by director by Ezra Simons. "I met Ezra because he had his edit suite next door to me and I would often poke my head in and see what he was working on" says Fowler.Simmons notes "We decided that it’d be fun if Lévyne was Lighting Assistant, instead of just appearing with the band. The subtle narrative really fit in with the songs message, and the long take at the end of the video serves as a nice pay off to tie the characters together.

"That shot was actually rather complex to pull off, we had the camera on a slider, a zoom motor attached to the lens, and various focus points. The band members also had to crawl along the floor to get back to their places while the shot was up close on Lévyne’s dance moves, so when I zoomed out they were revealed.”

"I loved being part of the video"
notes Lévyne, "Shannon's ideas for it were so good from the talking music box to the crew member stealing the spotlight."

Ionic columns and music boxes aside, part of what makes the clip so special is Lévyne breaking into dance as the final chorus comes around. "Since the music video had 80s undertones, I thought that the dance should reflect that, as well as being pretty satirical. I just watched some dance scenes from movies like Footloose and Fame and vaguely put together some ideas to throw around. I guess my intention was to show a 'letting-loose' kind of moment to come through since I was evidently fed up with my job!"
