Today, Ōtepoti indie-rock quartet Asta Rangu release their latest single/video, LLPLZA (Lalapalooza), the third from the bands upcoming debut record ENTRTNMNT - out Friday 27 May 2022.
The band have stormed into 2022 with several singles, ushering the band into regular play on SRN stations nationwide, and holding regular positions in the Radio One top 11, 95bFM top 10, SRN top 10, RadioScope Alternative Airplay Chart and Official NZ Top 40 Top Singles chart.
Songwriter Richard Ley-Hamilton, whose writing for indie-pop darlings Males has been internationally celebrated, guides Asta Rangu in a direction which reflects more accurately the tone of Ley-Hamilton’s sombre, pensive and astute lyrics.
"I have always been fascinated with the feeling of bittersweet - memories or moments that can be joyous and sad at the same time. As I tend to write the music first, I began with chords that had an open, melancholic quality, then lifted the tempo to give it a stronger pulse - more hopeful or elated sounding. The lyrics are a running-together of wordplay, surreal imagery and introspection, trying to paint a picture around this feeling."
"ENTRTNMNT promises to be quite diverse tonally, but the approach to each song was the same - create a musical environment where the song and its message are best served. I truly believe LLPLZA achieves this, and sitting towards the end of the album, its pensive optimism helps to resolve the darker and more doubtful themes of earlier tracks."
Ley-Hamilton reflects "It's the greatest feeling to finally realise the vision brought about by that first stumbling strum and mumbled nonsense."
Recorded by gifted engineer and producer De Stevens (Marlin’s Dreaming) at Otago University’s Te Korokoro o te Tūī and trace / untrace records HQ in North East Valley, LLPLZA is the last of three singles to be teased prior to the albums release.
ENTRTNMNT emerges from a love of eclecticism, with noise rock, synth pop, and psychedelia threaded together by field recordings. The intricate arrangements set the mood for Ley-Hamilton’s lyrics, contemplative and often surreal, exploring values, connection, progress and escapism.
After the postponement of their February single release tour, Asta Rangu are marking the release of ENTRTNMNT with a double album release tour, with Dunedin/Wellington space-doom collective Space Bats, Attack!, who will be celebrating the release of the sophomore record Oort , released during lockdown in August 2021.
The four date tour will see both bands perform in Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland each with a local guest performer.
Tickets are available from undertheradar.co.nz . Tickets purchased for the February tour will automatically be valid for these shows (excluding Dunedin).
