An inaugural custom tee shirt design competition for New Zealand Music Month has drawn a phenomenal response, with more than 450 designs and more than 2,000 votes received in just three weeks.

Hallensteins, which organised the online My Music Month Tee design competition to complement its official Music Month tees, today announced the winner – 17 year old Sam Walsh from Northcote College.

Sam was the public’s choice, receiving the most votes for his vibrant design titled “Play your NZ Music LOUD!”

“The inspiration for my design came from club culture, using colours that stand out and hit you and a splatter effect to show the power of NZ music coming at you through the speakers,” Sam says.

As a result of the outstanding number of entries and quality of designs, Hallensteins has selected a second winner. Mario Vincent’s design “NZ – music on loud” was chosen as his design evokes the essence of New Zealand Music Month.

“The headphones connected to the map of New Zealand symbolises that we are plugged in to New Zealand music – the whole point of NZ Music Month,” Mario says.

Both designers spoke of the many New Zealand musicians making them proud.

“When I see artists going international it really makes me proud that such talent is going beyond our great small country” says Sam.

The two winning designs are now in production to be sold during Music Month, with 10% of the proceeds going to the designers. The New Zealand Music Commission will also receive a percentage of proceeds from these tees as well as from sales of the classic Music Month clothing range, which includes a tee, hoodie and cap.

Local musicians Che Fu, and Lani from Elemeno P feature in advertising for the Music Month range, available from Hallensteins nationwide from next Thursday and also online at www.hallensteins.com

The My Music Month Tee competition was launched on 27 March and was an instant hit, with word of the competition spreading through the design and student communities in a matter of hours. Some 463 design submissions and 2074 votes were received.

Glenn Hesson, Hallensteins’ marketing manager says the company is rapt with the competition response. “There are some seriously talented young designers out there and there are so many tees we would have loved to place in the range”.

Hallensteins has been involved in New Zealand Music Month for four years. The idea for this year’s tee competition was sparked after Hallensteins received an influx of consumer feedback and design ideas when it launched limited edition tees last year.

Steve Newall, NZ Music Month Manager, says Hallensteins’ support is important in ensuring the success of NZ Music Month.

“The partnership between NZ Music Month and Hallensteins has been a fruitful one over the past few years, making the lion’s share of Music Month activities possible,” he says.

“Coming about due to requests from the public for our earlier promo-only tees, the retail of official merchandise has helped cement the target’s iconic status.

“It’s great each year to see the number of Kiwis who pull on a t-shirt and show their love for homegrown tunes, and particularly satisfying to look at the number and quality of entries in this year’s design competition,” he says.
