NZ On Air April News

25 April 2008 - 0 Comments

Hottest Ticket in town

NZ On Air stepped up for an exceptional music showcase at Auckland’s intimate Backbeat Bar above The Rock Shop on K’Road on Thursday 3 April. Three bands played live, and all made a great impression on the gathered radio programmers, radio DJs, and music TV stars.

Gasoline Cowboy won themselves a lot of fans with their four-song set, then The Exiles stepped up - with a string quartet accompaniment! The amps got turned up to 11 for Goodnight Nurse to round out the third of this series of NZ On Air showcases, arguably the most impressive yet.

Local Music Content on Radio

The last quarterly result from 2007 had NZ music content on commercial radio at 18.88%, and a 2007 calendar year-end result of 19.43%. So it was good to see that the first quarter of 2008 was up on both those figures. According to RadioScope, the January 1 – March 31 2008 quarter clocked in agonisingly close to the magic 20% - at 19.90%. The good news is that all but one radio format was up on the December quarter, and Rock clocked a mighty 26.05% for the quarter. The Urban format has posed a challenge lately but this also performed better, up 4% to 13.01%.

SXSW 2008 – The Kiwis are Back

The New Zealand contingent once again turned heads and pricked ears at the 2008 South By Southwest festival in Austin, Texas in March. Liam Finn and Katchafire proved to be
highlights, both playing packed shows, while other Kiwi acts such as Die! Die! Die!, The Ruby Suns and The Mint Chicks were also playing loud across Austin.

NZ On Air’s Phase Five and the NZ Music Commission’s Outward Sound programmes were represented, and the NZ Party attracted over 700 guests from around the globe, with five bands playing. Katchafire used SXSW as a launch pad for a two month tour of the USA, where they have been playing sold-out shows to upwards of 1200 people a night.

Journalist Belinda Henley made some great little TV vignettes with some of the NZ bands at SXSW; you can check them out on Phase Five TV on the new www.kiwihits.com website.
