Sneaking in just in time for New Zealand Music Month, Tāmaki Makaurau five-piece No Cigar today release new single Some Nights, their first new music for 2022! Infused with their infectious groove laden guitars, Some Nights kicks off their debut album campaign and marks a new chapter for No Cigar.
With big themes about wanting to change in order to suit a partner's needs, as opposed to wanting them to change for you, Some Nights is a carefree and laid back autumnal earworm featuring Willy’s signature vocals.
“The song is about a couple of friends of ours who live together. What started as a beautiful friendship between a straight male and a gay woman, grew into something neither had anticipated. He had become the exception to an otherwise steadfast sexual orientation - an enigma. Whilst the friendship always seemed to come first, they both grappled with this conundrum. He always respected her feelings immensely, but at times couldn't hide his confusion. We spoke a number of times about it and I eventually decided to write a song from his perspective. The song's message is one of respect. More precisely, about respecting someone's feelings and not thinking you are entitled to try to change their mind. Even when confused, he didn't question her. Instead he just wished that sometimes he could be what she wanted.” - Willy Ferrier, vocalist, No Cigar
The quirky video landing this Sunday was directed, edited and shot by the band’s guitarist Josh and all completely shot from the one camera angle in Willy’s flat. The band are captured putting in some epic teamwork, rearranging the room, hanging a significant piece of artwork…and busting moves, all culminating with the band jamming the song highlighting how much these guys love performing live!
2022 has so far seen the boys knuckled down and putting in some hard mahi getting their debut album recorded. Each month, from now until album release (September 2022), the band will release a new single off the record. Perhaps unbelievably, Some Nights almost didn’t make the cut for the album:
“we weren't planning on putting it in the album at all as it was underdeveloped. But during the pre-production sessions, after working through a few of the 'must have' songs we would chuck in a few wild card songs and just see what came out. For Some Nights, it came together in pretty much the first take and quickly went on to become our favourite recordings from those sessions and song from the album. “
Since the band’s inception in 2019 , the boys have grown a fiercely loyal fanbase while dodging lockdowns, playing sold out shows at Auckland’s Galatos, Tuning Fork, Whammy and Sweat Shop, opening for Mako Road at the iconic Powerstation and playing across the festival circuit including Rhythm and Vines, Outfield Festival, The Longline Classic and That Weekend. They have already surpassed over 2 million streams on Spotify alone with over 40,000 monthly listeners, had singles chart in the New Zealand Hot Chart including their 2020 single 1999 which was also playlisted on Radio Hauraki.
With plenty of new music on the horizon, No Cigar are set for a busy year ahead. Stay tuned!
