Music News - APRA Announces New Children's Music Awards

18 May 2008 - 0 Comments

"Music has the power to inspire, to delight, to transform and to motivate… It is vital that we teach our children to listen to music, to appreciate its joys and participate in its creation."
Julie Wylie – Early Childhood Music Specialist & Educator

To celebrate the growth of children's music in New Zealand, APRA are proud to announce two new awards.

The APRA Children's Song of the Year celebrates our songwriters and composers who write for the children of New Zealand. Partnering with perennial kids favourite What Now, we are also pleased to announce the What Now NZ Children's Video of the Year.

These inaugural awards will be presented during StarFest - the finale event of Christchurch City Council's annual KidsFest – at the James Hay Theatre, Christchurch, on Friday the 18th of July.

The entry deadline for these awards is the 26th of May 2008. You can find further information regarding criteria and entry forms for each award in the APRA Supports section at www.apra.co.nz. Finalists will be announced early July.

The finalists of the What Now NZ Children's Video of the Year get a money-can't-buy promotional opportunity: What Now will stream the finalists' videos on their website www.whatnow.tv for four weeks, inviting their viewers to watch each clip and vote for their favourite. The leader of the vote will be the award winner as chosen by the What Now viewers.

APRA Board Member Arthur Baysting says, "In some respects, children are often a forgotten audience in New Zealand music. Hopefully these awards will encourage our songwriters to help change that."

About APRA: The Australasian Performing Right Association is a non-profit service organisation, established in 1926, administering the rights of the world's songwriters, composers and publishers in New Zealand and Australia. APRA represents over 50,000 Australasian members and over 2 million writers and publishers throughout the world under reciprocal, bilateral contracts with similar overseas service organisations.
