Dateline is the musical project of Katie Everingham (she/her), a musician and songwriter currently based in Pōneke (Wellington). Her band is made up of the cream of Tāmaki Makaurau’s (Auckland) indie and alternative crop featuring Callum Devlin (he/him, Hans Pucket), Priya Sami (she/her, Bub) and Ruby Walsh (she/her Lips).
Dateline's music oozes emotion by blending earnest harmonies that hark back to early 00's indie pop, with the cool burn of UK guitar groups from the 90s. Special note must be made of Everingham's lyricism, as she encapsulates the mixed feelings and insecurities that arise from getting older.
Today Dateline share a their debut album Dumb For My Age, a collection of that features the singles Do It Right, Dumb For My Age, Love Hertz and Such A Bitch.

Dumb For My Age displays Everingham's knack for expertly crafting heartfelt indie rock, as well as corralling her community of talented friends.
Asked to reflect on the record, Everingham starts at the beginning: "The first iteration of Dateline and a few of the songs on this album started all the way back in 2018! The original line up of Dateline 1.0 was Robert Bruce (The Naenae Express), Ruby Walsh (Lips), and Liz Stokes (The Beths), plus occasionally Ben Locke (Phoebe Rings) on percussion or even keys. I brought the songs like Such A Bitch and If You Want It to the band and we worked on them together. Liz would record some of them at Jonathan Pearce's (The Beths) studio on Karangahape Road where we practiced. Those are the recordings that have stuck around and ended up on the album four years later. At the time I would never have guessed that it would take me so long to collate everything and put it out as an album but I really should’ve known - this definitely seems to be my standard pace."
With members leaving for international travel, Everingham put together Dateline 2.0 - Callum Devlin (Hans Pucket), Priya Sami (Bub), Harriet Ellis (Na Noise, Dick Move) and then Ruby Walsh again, and Ben still on percussion.
"We kept playing most of the original stuff but this is when I wrote a few of the more rocky/grungy numbers like Love Hertz and Don’t Know What To Do With Me. Dumb For My Age has all the tracks from when we played as the 2018 version of the band to the 2021 version of the band. I think it has resulted in a bit of a smorgasbord of songs and styles and sometimes I feel like it’s a bit too much of a mixed bag. But, I like all the different vibes that the songs bring to the album and although it may not be entirely cohesive I think it does make for interesting listening."
Dumb For My Age was tracked by Callum Passels (Hans Pucket, The Saxobros), mixed by Jonathan Pearce (The Beths), and mastered by Oliver Devlin (Hans Pucket). "I feel so lucky to have had such clever people work on bringing this collection of music together into one tidy package," declares Everingham.
Now that the album is released, Everingham says "It is a bit of a relief to finally be putting this album out - there were definitely times along the way where I thought it may not happen and that the songs may just sit on a computer somewhere. Even if only a few people listen to it, at least I can tell my daughter when she is older that her Mum was a cool rock lady once upon a time who actually finished and released an album."
