NZ’s emerging voice of heartfelt alt-pop/rock, Macey, bares his soul in his latest single, Lonely and debut EP The Lovers: Side A, which dropped today.
Including hit tracks The River and Summer Grunge, The Lovers: Side A is an intimate narrative of love and loss, and an exploration into connection and relationships. Macey says the EP is a chronological narrative of growth, with each of the six tracks revealing a significant moment in his recent life.
“The Lovers: Side A deals with confusion and fighting against accepting life’s punches. It explores some of my angriest moments and the initial madness following heartbreak and loss,” says Macey.
Written with Ben Malone, the focus single Lonely is an energetic pop anthem, with powerful vocals, signature guitar stylings, and dance-inducing drum beats. Macey says the track explores the innate human desire for connection, and how this longing has got the best of him before.
“I was on tour and dancing with strangers after my set. I nearly kissed someone else, my partner at the time was home in Auckland. I wrote Lonely about the aftermath of cheating, and the pain it would’ve caused, and how that need for connection can be so overwhelming sometimes.”
With The Lovers: Side A, Macey invites listeners to dance, to cry, to feel, and to join him on a journey of connection through music.
Through soaring anthems and quiet, quirky acoustic ballads, Macey begins to learn how to take the hits and flow with the change. The EP takes inspiration from the likes of The 1975, Johnny Cash, Neil Young, Queen, Bruce Springsteen.
Macey, who is signed to indie label Five AM, has established himself as a natural storyteller and captivating live performer. He’s opened for both Tash Sultana and Lime Cordiale at their sold out Auckland shows. His debut singles The River and Sumer Grunge have seen success on both the official NZ music charts and Spotify, including New Music Friday AU & NZ, Fresh Finds AU & NZ and The Local List, as well as Apple’s Antidote and New in Indie.
Macey will be playing an Album Release Show at Galatos on October 6. Tickets are available here.
