Grey Lynn raised Niuean rapper Diggy Dupé today shares his new EP Hues his first solo project since 2020’s That’s Me, That’s Team.
Hues is a process orientated creation with Diggy explaining that instead of relying on subject matter and overall themes, the focus on Hues is about the creative journey rather than the end result.
Of the EP’s creation, Diggy says:
“Hues is about a connection between colour, sound and emotion. Hues is a process-driven EP. I’ve named this tape Hues due to the colours and shades I would visualise for each song. Unlike previous projects which relied heavily on the subject matter and overall themes, this tape is more focused on the creative journey rather than the end product.”
Produced solely by Haz Beats (with the aid of live instrumentation thanks to Adam Fuhr and Chip Matthews) which gives this body of work more sense of cohesiveness. Haz would bring a beat to the table, and before writing any lyrics, Diggy would envisage a colour or a mood and write in response to that.
“When Haz and I are in the studio together, there are no strict guidelines to the creative process, which means we get to explore a lot of different ideas. Even though this is the case, I have one guideline to work by. I would respond to the beat by visualising a colour or mood and writing with that in mind. In return, this would reveal the subject matter for the song. Long story short it’s somewhat a mind map of my thought process.”
The EP is light on features, something that Diggy says helps him to speak his own truth within the EP. Focus track for the EP Got Mine features Best Pacific Soul/RnB Artist 2022 Award recipient Sam V while Lukan Rai$ey lends his talents to European Dreams. The rest is Diggy at his creative best. A visual fine arts student, Diggy has been around colour, art and creatives all his life and says his background in fine arts and graffiti helped him to visualise exactly what he wanted from Hues.
With the cover art designed by legendary multi-disciplinary artist Askew One, Diggy also commissioned Askew to come up with an image for each track. A process that Diggy says adds to the whole overall theme for each track. These stunning, abstract artworks can be viewed below.
Undoubtedly one of Aotearoa’s most exciting hip hop artists, Diggy has had an incredible year with two Pacific Music Award wins (Best Producer and Best Video), a win with the APRA Best Original Music In A Series at the 2022 Silver Scroll Awards, Best Original Score finalist at the 2022 NZ TV Awards and Best Hip Hop Finalist and Best Producer Finalist at the 2022 Aotearoa Music Awards all for his work on The Panthers Original Soundtrack alongside Choicevaughan, P. Smith and Troy Kingi.
Hues is a new venture for the creative, a concise and organic EP, and one that is sure to see Diggy continue his rise.
