Music News - Hawke’s Bay artist Jake delivers chill single with hip hop edge, 'Westside'

Emerging Hawke’s Bay artist Jake has released his latest single, the chill and nostalgic track Westside, out today.

With the track rooted in chill, R’n’B sounds, Westside strays into a cruisy hip-hop territory with its laid-back beat and smooth vocals. Carried on the bed of a mellow piano, Westside is road trip ready; soaked in warm feelings of nostalgia and good times.
“Westside is a song about reminiscing on memories made with someone and wondering if those memories can ever be recreated,” explains Jake. “The song was inspired by a trip I took to the west coast of New Zealand with a special someone. This song is pretty much me toying with the idea of us reuniting again.”
Written by Jake (AKA Jake Murphy), Westside was recorded and mixed by John Garcia at GSR studios in Auckland, and mastered by Adam Grover.
“Half of this song was written to a reggae/hip hop beat over three years ago,” says Jake. “Fast forward a few years to the first session I ever had with John Garcia; he pulled up a bunch of beats and I started singing ‘Westside’ to one of them really naturally.”
Today’s release follows Jake’s recently released track Podium and the slick debut single Waiting List. With both songs charting in the Hot 20 Singles Chart in Aotearoa and Waiting List receiving support from The Edge, ZM and George FM radio, there’s no doubt Jake has hit the ground running. These two singles have also been a smash success in the streaming world, with ‘Podium’ racking up over 300k streams in the short time since its February release.
