The Human Kind have today released an official remix of Mā Te Wai by Tiki Taane and Black Comet.

Originally a trip hop track, the remix of Mā Te Wai explores a whole new way of presenting the waiata, through the eyes of the formidable Tiki Taane and Black Comet AKA Laughton Kora.
"It was such a cool experience working with Tiki and Laughton, they created a real whanau vibe and were so welcoming. The way that they infused their own creative magic while maintaining the essence of the waiata was masterful,” says Chrissy Diamond, the group’s founder.
“We loved the challenge of this remix! And trying to find a different way to present this beautiful waiata as the younger sibling to the original. Great to see this being released. Much love THK fam,” says Tiki Taane.
The track's lead vocal is sung by Debbie Toko-Stevens, along with the soul harmonies of Laughton Kora, Chrissy Diamond, Jason Slade, Mitch French and the percussive vocal touch of Tiki Taane.
Mā Te Wai was originally written in support of The Human Kind kaupapa, where they create and perform music to raise awareness and fundraise for charities that tautoko ’Taha hinengaro’ mental wellbeing.
“The song was inspired by and based on the research paper Mā Te Wai - Ka Piki Ake Te Hauora written by Dr Te Manaaroha Rollo a music therapy specialist,” says Debbie Toko-Stevens.
“Speaking to the child within us when we are in dark times, in an eternal never-ending night, or, te pō, a place where no light exists, depression can feel like this but having a whakatauāki like Mā Te Wai to come back to is a great touchstone for grounding oneself" says Debbie.
The Mā Te Wai remixis joined by the previous releases from the band this year, Tell Me How, Water and Fire, and Find My Way, with more to follow from this exciting up and coming music project.
