Sci-fi psych-rock duo Ripship announce their first LP Fearsome Engine, set to be released on the 16th December, 2022. The nine-track album will be an evolution of their genre-bending 2020 EP Greebles, expanding on themes of space exploration, technological anxiety and exponential growth. Ripship make no compromises on their relentless, energetic live sound. Guitars were recorded by Ryan Brand at Cordial Studios, with the rest recorded and produced by Peter Ruddell (Jazmine Mary, Soft Bait) across various venues and studio spaces on Karangahape road. Ripship have teamed up with 1:12 Records to press the album to beautiful 180g vinyl.
Ripship has released two singles from the LP, Ripship is Online and Moore’s Law. Both rose quickly to top spots on the 95bFM top 10, with Moore’s Law also taking first place on the Oct 30th SRN Top 10.
Fearsome Engine is set to send audiences oscillating between dreamy escapism and existential dread, and to challenge what’s possible as a two-piece band.
Ripship is Online - Single
Ripship is Online describes a civilisation at the beginning of their journey to the stars. Retro synths and groovy polyrhythms interjected with wall-of-noise guitar tones set up a jammy outro unlike any other. The song toes the line between Ripship’s classic sci-fi camp and the dark, existential nature of space and futurism. The song has long been in the duo’s live rotation, and has finally been given the loving treatment it deserves to be enjoyed in a digital format.
Moore’s Law - Single
Moore’s Law taps into feelings of technological anxiety and fear of exponential growth, particularly the fear that a truly intelligent AI has already been created and is simply biding its time. Lyrics detail the life of a power-hungry digital intelligence as it gains consciousness and develops an unquenchable thirst for human blood. Psychedelic ascending guitar lines over a polyrhythmic 5/4 drum groove create a driving forward momentum, which culminates in an energetic thrash-metal finale.
