Radio Active.FM, Te Whanganui A Tara’s favourite station in the nation, is celebrating 45 years in your ears this coming week! They'll be celebrating in style with a whole array of excitement throughout the next two weeks. From the 21st of November until the 4th of December, join them on-air and online as they honour the favourite hosts, guests, musicians, DJs & journalists that have made Active so great!
There’ll be two supercharged Active Live sessions with iconic & extremely “Active” band The Phoenix Foundation, songstress extraordinaire and beloved Activite Deva Mahal, as well as an acoustic session with local indie legend Mark Williams of Marineville and Cookie Brooklyn & The Crumbs. Reminisce with some of Active’s most iconic alumni throughout the week: Tova O’Brien, Samantha Hayes, John Campbell & Dai Henwood will all join Maggie & Kedron to catch up about their histories with Active. It’s not only broadcasts you need to listen out for - head online and take a visit to The 45th Gallery for a visual history of Active’s past & present. Peruse incredible content from Active’s history submitted by DJs, prior hosts & fans of the station.
There'll be DJ mixes from iconic local music makers & beloved Active friends: DJ Mu, known for his incredible live sets with Fat Freddy’s Drop and his wonderful Roots & Culture shows on Radio Active.FM; Barnaby Weir, known for his iconic work with Fly My Pretties and The Black Seeds (originally known as the Active house band!); and iconic dance duo The Upbeats, one of Aotearoa’s legendary dance duos.
Of course, what would the celebration be without some classic content from Active’s past? Their seminal long-form interview series Uncharted (now known as Recharted) will be reappearing on the airwaves, featuring Chris Knox, Fur Patrol, Shihad, Moana & The Tribe, Weta, Bic Runga, Urban Disturbance, Darcy Clay, Southside of Bombay & Hinewehi Mohi. They’ll also be playing Active Live sessions from years prior, including for some incredible local acts: The Clean, The Phoenix Foundation, High Dependency Unit, D-Super, Letterbox Lambs, Fur Patrol, Video Kid (AKA Bret McKenzie), Kora, The Black Seeds & The Dub Connection.
Listen in throughout the week for a very special Fat Freddy’s Drop related announcement! Tune into Mu’s 45th mix to hear about a very special, never-before-seen release happening on Saturday 3rd of December.
Since RadioActive's humble beginnings in the Student Union building of Victoria University in 1977, they’ve cheered on the most eclectic parts of Aotearoa’s creative scene, championing some of our most iconic artistic taonga along the way. 40 years on from 1982 (when FM broadcasting arrived in Aotearoa) and we’re still cheering! Bigger, louder & prouder than ever before, alongside our Student Radio Network whānau. RadioActive couldn’t exist without the hundreds of people who’ve made Radio Active great over its 45 years. Hundreds of hosts, DJs, volunteers, friends & fans have put in endless hours, ensuring Radio Active remains the spearhead of culture in the Greater Wellington region. This anniversary is as much a celebration of them as it is the station; we would not exist without you all.
