Nominations open for 2009 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards

Nominations for the 44th annual RIANZ Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards are now open.

Entries can be made online at www.nzmusicawards.co.nz, and unless otherwise specified, are open to New Zealand recordings commercially released between 1 June 2008 and 31 May 2009.

Nominations are being accepted for Album and Single of the year, Best Group, Best Male and Female Solo Artists, Breakthrough Artist, Best Music Video, Best Maori, Rock, Urban / Hip Hop, Dance / Electronica, Aotearoa Roots, Gospel / Christian and Classical albums, as well as the Technical award categories of Best Producer, Best Engineer & Best Album Cover.

The awards finalists - along with the Technical Award winners - will be announced at the Finalists Announcement and Technical Awards presentation in Auckland on Wednesday 2 September.

The announcement of the 2009 Legacy Award winner (presented last year to legendary Dunedin band Straitjacket Fits) will also be made at this time.

RIANZ chief executive Campbell Smith says it has been another terrific year for New Zealand music and he expects the 2009 award entries to be very competitive.

“The growth of New Zealand music and the breadth of our musical creativity continues year on year. We will be celebrating the best of the best at the awards ceremony this October. Get your nomination in and prepare for an excellent celebration of our music.”

NOTES:

• All nominations must be submitted online via the official website, www.nzmusicawards.co.nz
• Copies of the conditions of entry are available from www.nzmusicawards.co.nz
• To be eligible for judging, all nominations including any accompanying material such as CDs and DVDs must be signed and with RIANZ by 5pm on Friday 29 May 2009.

The Tuis presented at the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards 2009 ceremony are for:

Album of the Year; Vodafone Single of the Year; Steinlager Pure Best Group; Best Male Solo Artist; Mazda Best Female Solo Artist; Breakthrough Artist of the Year; Highest Selling NZ Album; Highest Selling NZ Single; NZ on Air Radio Airplay Record of the Year; C4 Best Music Video; PPNZ Best Rock Album; Best Urban/Hip Hop Album; Best Dance/Electronica Album; Best Aotearoa Roots Album; Best Maori Album; Best Gospel/Christian Album; Best Classical Album; Vodafone People’s Choice Award, International Achievement Award, The New Zealand Herald Legacy Award.

No finalists are announced for the Highest Selling NZ Single, Highest Selling NZ Album or NZ on Air Radio Airplay Record of the Year Awards.

The International Achievement, The New Zealand Herald Legacy Award and Outstanding Achievement awards are judged by the RIANZ Board and awarded at the Board’s discretion. No finalists are announced for these categories.

Technical Award Categories (presented at the Finalists Announcement 2 September) are for:

• MAINZ Best Producer
• MAINZ Best Engineer
• Best Album Cover
