Terminal Patience was recorded in June 2022, in the cramped lounge of an upper Aro Valley flat, produced by Connor Lyttle (Macho Macho, Birdcage). Thus far, all of the Big Pharma discography has been recorded DIY, with what little (often cheap or half broken) equipment they’ve had on hand. This recording process produces an unforeseen nostalgic effect that tests well with preview listeners.
Guitars in Big Pharma are performed by Lachlan Burne (Macho Macho, Birdcage), Drums from Ryley Doherty-Lawson (Esteem Engine, Drive) and Bass/Vocals from Sam Hulme (Esteem Engine).
This single also features contributions from Marcus Laurence (Birdcage) on saxophone & Connor Lyttle (Macho Macho, Birdcage) on percussion.
Big Pharma’s sound could be compared to the hay days of the 1990's midwest alternative rock scene. The same blood as giants like At The Drive-In, Slint & Duster flow in Big Pharma’s veins. On Terminal Patience, Big Pharma show their skill in dynamic shifts, and tongue in cheek vocals that reflect the (spoiler alert) satirical/ironic approach the group adopts at times. With this twist, the band could be placed on the same shelves as groups like Primus, Frank Zappa, or even System of a Down.
The aforementioned attitude is front and centre in the $0.00NZD budget music video, directed by Andre Van der Velden. This gory, dark comedy short follows protagonist Ryan-Leigh Dollarhyde Law-San, on a day where he receives some particularly bad news. Portrayed by bandmate Ryley Lawson, Ryan-Leigh stars in an all-new and completely unpredictable adventure, intervening in various ludicrous scenarios.
Publicly endorsed by comedian/journalist Guy Williams, and anticipated by music fans region wide, the unique proposal of Terminal Patience is sure to make a splash in Aotearoa’s indie pool.
