Brimming with an abundance of warmth and excitement, Surf Friends give us one last glimpse into their upcoming album, Sonic Waves, with the release of its final, electrifying single Woohoo.
“Woohoo is really our ultimate stripped back surf/skate song.” Surf Friends say of the track. “The lyrics speak for themselves — we think about surfing and skating all the time!”
Much like its name proclaims, the song infuses our ears with a joyful mantra, with shoegaze-inspired guitars soaking up Surf Friends’ (AKA Pete Westmoreland and Brad Coley) blissful melodies and
dreamy sun-drenched sound.
This is the final single to be released from their upcoming album Sonic Waves — out digitally and on CD on March 17 via Flying Nun Records.
Amongst the excitement of their album release, Surf Friends announced two album release shows in March to celebrate. Taking place in their hometown, Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland as well as surf capital Whāingaroa/Raglan, Surf Friends will be joining forces with Power Nap (in Raglan) and King Of The Sadboys (in Auckland) to put on an epic night of music, and showcase their new tunes live and in the flesh. Surf Friends have also just been announced as the support act for U.S neo-psych band Crumb’s upcoming debut Aotearoa show at The Hollywood Avondale on Tuesday 14th March. Tickets available HERE.

Sonic Waves is Surf Friends’ forthcoming album and their first full length release since their hypnotic 2019 offering, Doing Your Thing. It's radiant first single, Something Real garnered instant success, flying to the top half
of the 95bFM Top 10 and remaining on the list every week since its release, peaking at #1, as well as reaching #2 on the Radioscope NZ Alt Charts.
Surf Friends say of Sonic Waves that “the focus of the record was to keep it raw and more distorted than previous releases." The album sees the duo of Brad Coley and Peter Westmoreland joining forces with long-time producer, Mark Howden,
to take on new musical directions, whilst retaining their dreamy psych-surf energy that put them on the musical map all the way back in 2009, when they debuted their self-titled EP.
Sonic Waves will be available digitally, as well
as on CD on March 17, 2023 via Flying Nun Records.
For a duo, Surf Friends sure know how to make an impressive amount of noise. The Auckland/Tāmaki-Makaurau-based two-piece, made up of Brad Coley (guitar, vocals, keys, harmonica, drum machine) and Peter Westmoreland (bass, keys, vocals), formed in 2009. Drawing inspirations from the jangle-pop of early Flying Nun bands such as The Clean, Surf Friends defined their distinct psych-surf and post-punk sound, using driving guitars, drum machines and synths loops to create a visceral, solar-powered wash of sound. Their 2010 debut album, Confusion, gained worldwide attention, Pitchfork praising their “off-the-cuff brilliance”. Over their almost fourteen-year career, they have performed and collaborated with the likes of Hamish and David Kilgour (The Clean), Nick Roughan (The Skeptics), The Black Watch and Snapper and have performed at festivals such as The Others Way, Psych Fest and Field Of Dreams.
