Ōtautahi party-starters Haven are proud to present the debut live performance of one of Aotearoa’s finest recent underground heroes - Mokotron - on Saturday 15th April.
Mokotron is a Tāmaki-based Māori producer from Ngāti Hine, who spreads seismic waves of low frequency Indigenous electronic music. Breakbeats, deep bass, puoro, karakia and mōteatea are utilised to create their dark, trauma driven tracks. Exploring ancient futurism through music, Mokotron imagines a reality without colonisation, where the ancestors transition from the ancient world into the modern, creating futures of hope juxtaposed with the hard realities of urban disconnection.
2022 was a breakout year for Mokotron releasing two 12” EPs on Spanish label Electro Records, as well as featuring on digital compilations assembled by Crazed Behaviour (UK), Ovelha Tracks (Portugal) and Strange Behaviour (Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Wellington). Their independently released Tawhito EP was awarded Te Tohu Hopunga Puoro Mariu (Favourite EP / Mixtape) at the 2022 Student Radio Network Awards, with the title track placing fifth on the network’s SRN TOP 10 for the year. Beyond this Mokotron is currently working towards an album of breakbeat, puoro infused Reo Māori tracks coming via Tāmaki Makaurau label Sunreturn in late 2023.
Now finally gracing the stage for the first time, Mokotron’s live set will include puoro performances, robotic vocoder vocals, and live dub mixing throughout his signature Māori break-beat and dark electro tracks.
As part of their current focus on utilising new and alternative venue locations, Haven are bringing their flourishing event series to the Durham Street under-bridge Benny’s Barber Shop car park. The concrete environment has fast become one of Ōtautahi’s most sought-after new musical locales - with its industrial surrounds providing the perfect back-drop for late night dance parties.
Moreover, audio will be provided by the legendary Subtle Sound System. The full system will be in effect for the event - providing unmatched power and quality for the artists to represent their sound on.
On support will be Filth affiliate BBYFACEKILLA, known for their fierce DJ sets as showcased on their infamous Boiler Room stream in 2021, Haven label boss and international techno star Keepsakes, and local selectors Tikka and Jay Luv.
