Shapeshifter release the first of their new works for 2023 on March 24th, with the epic journey through drum and bass that is Runaway.
A half-time future soul intro transitions into uplifting disco-sprinkled d’n’b as the vocals urge you to “pick your feet up off the ground”.
In the words of the band’s singer P.Digsss:
“Runaway is your classic Streetfighter in song version.
Find the girl, fight for the girl, escape with the girl, get captured, and fight the Big Boss.
Steal his chopper.
Clock the internet.”
Never an artist to just rinse and repeat, the song’s middle section takes the listener to a new darker place before returning to the classic early 2000s vibes that recall huge anthems from J Majik or Ed Rush and Optical, but with a distinctly modern twist.
With euphoric build-ups, drops, and switches that are classic drum and bass magic, Runaway is another uplifting anthem in the Shapeshifter catalogue.

Due to the extreme weather events around Aotearoa this summer, and off the back of expert advice, three of Shapeshifter's scheduled summer shows could not proceed.
After months of heartbreak and hard work alining artists, suppliers, crew and venues, Shapeshifter has announced that Whangamatā Beach Break will be going ahead Friday, 5th January 2024, with the original 2023 line-up - Ocean Alley, My Baby, Masaya and Flaxxies. All tickets previously purchased from authorised outlets for the Whangamatā date remain valid for the rescheduled show without needing exchange. Patrons unable to attend the new date can obtain a refund from the point of purchase from March 31st. Refunds will be open for two weeks and it can take up to 10 working days to receive a refund.
New tickets for the 2024 event are onsale now from beachbreak.co.nz
Unfortunately, Nelson Beach Break, due to take place on Waitangi Weekend 2023, has been cancelled. All Ticket holders will automatically obtain a 100% refund to the card of purchase. Refunds will start on March 31st and can take up to 10 days to clear.
Says Shapeshifter. “We really appreciate our fans hanging in there. With Nelson, everyone has tried, but it has not been possible to present the same show on another date. Whangamatā will proceed on Jan 5th with the same lineup, and it will be a great chance to come down and rejuvenate local businesses that have had a rough summer."
