Grecco Romank release their sewer pop album 'Wet Exit', tour Aotearoa

24 March 2023 - 0 Comments

Billie Fee (she/her), Mikey Sperring (he/him - Drab Doo Riffs, Bib Kids) and Damian Golfinopoulos (he/him, Stress Cadet) are the members of Grecco Romank, a Tāmaki Makaurau based trio who make electronic music perfectly suited for a European Dungeon Rave.

Since 2020 the band have been releasing luxuriously bogan techno tracks inspired by microgenres like Industrial and Eurodance. Their debut album Red Tower was a critical success in Aotearoa’s underground circles and was accompanied by a perfume entitled Leathery Coward.

Following the recently released singles Celestial Poison and Romance Writer, Grecco Romank share their sweaty and soured opus Wet Exit (available on Vinyl LP and digitally via Moral Support). They also kick off their victory lap tour of Aotearoa tonight, performing in Kirikiriroa before heading down country throughout March / April.

Wet Exit is a curious, provoking listen, driven by relentless electronic pulses and harsh TR-909 kick drums. Once you're a couple of tracks in listeners will begin to perceive that Grecco Romank is the work of three manic, funny, and deranged individuals.

"Wet Exit feels like as a step forward from Red Tower (Grecco Romank's 2021 debut)" says the Tāmaki trio. "With Wet Exit we wanted to push ourselves to explore new sounds, especially vocally, to create more drama and duality. We took care to add extra steps to the production process, using lots of overdubs and guest musicians to enhance the arrangements."

"We knew we wanted to play with a slower ballads but to also stock the album with our signature grit and grime in the form of distorted mono bass synths and 909 rave kit staples. It was a huge plus to involve extra vocalists and to even multitrack Billie several times so that she could show of her harmonic range. For Mikey we started experimenting with his ‘on the street’ voice, trying to make it less theatrical and more colloquial."

"As always our writing process is very different from song to song. Some are really dark and obscure while other songs are quite playful and tongue-in-cheek. Most of our songs don’t present our point of view - but instead the perspective of the characters we conjure. The words have to match the texture of the music, so there’s plenty of vague dystopian imagery punctuated with absurdist aspirations."

Throughout Wet Exit the band are joined by a number of household names from Aotearoa’s underground music community including Kraus, Ex-Partner, Hermione Johnson, Ron Gallipoli, Jeff Henderson, and Moider Mother. "Before we formed Grecco Romank we had all been talking about how we are surrounded by so much talent in our immediate community of friends and whānau. It was always kind of a dream to have a multi-headed hydra of a band. Wet Exit seemed like the perfect time to exploit the talents of those around us to maximum effect."

Now that the album is completed, and pressed to 140g black vinyl the band reflect "It is a huge relief to be finished with the album. We were performing all these numbers live as a way of kind of testing them before we recorded them. So it feels like they’ve had a whole life before the album. It's exciting to finally be at a point where people can experience it as a whole, and on vinyl no less."

Grecco Romank are hitting the road to celebrate the release of Wet Exit. Their live show is unparalleled, reaching tortuously high energy levels that deliver full sonic commitment.
