Today Sounds of La Salle, hailing from De La Salle College, release their new single ‘You’. This single stunned audiences as a part of their winning performance at the Smokefree Tangata Beats National Final in Sept 2022.
The competition, established in 1996, showcases the unique cultural identity of Aotearoa New Zealand and the Pacific by requiring participants to incorporate Te Reo Māori or a Pasifika language, instruments, dance or movement in their performance. The event aims to encourage young musicians to express themselves with cultural relevance and to support original Aotearoa Kiwi music. Smokefree Tangata Beats standout successes include Nesian Mystik, the only New Zealand band to ever have ten singles all certified gold or platinum; plus Ria Hall, Spacifix, Adeaze, Strangely Arousing and Alien Weaponry.
Singer Faigafou Amani emphasizes the importance of music as a tool for self-expression and a pathway for young 'la sallian' musicians to follow: "Winning nationals just goes to show that if you really put your mind to something, you can achieve it."
After making it to the top 10 of Smokefree Tangata Beats in 2021, Sounds of La Salle returned in 2022 and were named the national winners. Alongside $3k worth of musical equipment from Rockshop NZ, they also won the recording of 'You' and an accompanying video with the support of NZ On Air and the RQP team.
Recorded at Parachute Studios in Tāmaki Makaurau with Scott Seabright as the engineer, Lepani as mentor/producer, and Leonard Folau as mentor, You showcases the unique talent of Sounds of La Salle. The official music video was created by Dave Thomson at Imaginary Creative.
The band was joined by Lepani (multiple Pacific Music Award Nominee), who mentored them through the recording process. About what stands out to him about this young band he said, “amazing stage presence and performance ability. They had a great foundation. These guys are really professional and have a super polished sound, and I can’t wait to see what is next for Sounds of La Salle.”
Sounds of La Salle's winning lineup includes Faigafou Amani and Joshua Alo on lead vocals, Sebastian Nisa on guitar, Fonteyn Olofai on keyboard, Ioane Pasikala on bass, and Psalms Vaotuua on drums.
