Following the recent release of her debut EP Throne of Mine, NZ dark-pop artist Michèle Ducray has today shared a music video for the EP’s title track - filmed in Japan!
Becoming known for her impressive videos, this latest offering was filmed in Tokyo, Japan by the Kwasnik Pictures crew - directed by Alex Hargreaves. Throne of Mine is pop-punk and synthy, grungy and erratic, chaotic but polished. It’s fast-paced and captivatingly dark.
Michèle says the video features everything the song portrays - the weird, whacky and wonderful dark-pop, punk and edgy scene of Tokyo city. “It relates to me as I sort of had a weird, whacky yet wonderful childhood with some dark expressive lyrical components.”
From walking for hours every night till fatigued in 36-degree heat - to dancing in front of hundreds of people on the busiest crossing in the world, Michèle says the video captures Tokyo and the track perfectly. “We’re talking Tokyo! fast-paced, high space fashion, dark city night dancing vibes!” exclaims Michèle. “It’s about a girl’s inner beast coming alive at night, with a heavy emphasis on an alien life being fascinated with a world so different. We treated the video like someone who had just landed here being fascinated by a city like Tokyo, then becoming one with the environment in a really crazy, freaky way.”
Michèle only just released her debut EP, Throne of Mine - an edgy, fun, vulnerable, four-track collection, full of dark-pop goodness! Working with Michèle was celebrated producer Liam Quinn (Peaches PRC, Rita Ora), who produced, mixed and mastered it at his studio in Sydney, Australia. She also worked with Christchurch-based musician Jesse Bruce, who helped with getting the initial demos down and added some
fun guitar licks along the way.
A string of previously released Throne of Mine singles have seen Michèle already receive widespread local support from the likes of The Edge, ZM and TAHI. She’s
also featured on playlists like Spotify’s New Music Friday AU & NZ and Apple Music’s New in Pop. These singles are the brilliantly crafted Monster,
the sassy and slick Psycho (both
released with artistically stunning and skillfully produced music videos), and the relatable, hook-laden Ace of Spades. Now Throne of Mine has
quickly joined the list of hits.
Michèle Ducray is a talented artist who’s worked with Simon Gooding (Dua Lipa, Pink), Pacific Heights (Drax Project, Shapeshifter), Liam Quinn (Delta Goodrem, Rita Ora), and DJ Ruebik. Signed to Antipodes Records, her music has been featured on some of NZ’s biggest radio stations and this year performed at Bay Dreams and Electric Avenue. A self-confessed "fan of the peculiar", Michèle is inspired by mysterious and sinister themes such as horror and the colourful characteristics of circus life. Her sound is characterised by a mix of intoxicating vocals, deep drum & bass, and lucid pop melodies for a melancholic yet energetically upbeat immersion of seductive tones. Now’s the time to step into Michèle Ducray’s dark-pop world by listening to her daring debut EP Throne of Mine - and watching her new video!!
