No Cigar release anticipated sophomore album 'The Great Escape'

After a string of captivating singles, Aotearoa’s No Cigar have today unveiled their anticipated second album The Great Escape, along with the sparkling new focus single Great Escape.

Dreamy guitars, melodic hooks and a solid rhythm section work together to create a sense of escapism throughout the entirety of the album. Willy Ferrier’s vocals are emotive, captivating, wistful and often convey hints of nostalgia, lyrically exploring a desire to get away, and feelings of being “spellbound by what we see of the world from afar”.

“The meaning of the great escape extends beyond the desire to fly the coop, but instead points towards the general notion of escapism,” reflects Willy Ferrier. “As I ponder the tracklist in my head, every single song expresses the desire to escape, be it into the arms of a new lover, a substance or a new land.”

Made with support from NZ On Air, The Great Escape was written by No Cigar (Willy Ferrier, Josh Morrice, Sam Benson, Ned Gow and Arthur Gillies) at the “spiritual home of our music”, Mangawhai. The album was produced by Connor Jaine (Mako Road, Flaxxies, Casper, Summer Thieves, Dolphin Friendly), recorded at Roundhead Studios in Tāmaki Makaurau, with additional writing and recording from Jono Lee (Bespin, Cut Off Your Hands).

“A bunch of the songs on the album were written on the end of my bed with a guitar, such as The Vibrance, Haere Mai and The Occult,” says Willy Ferrier.

“But in Mangawhai, we all got so excited to be back together writing with each other that we just went crazy. It was the first few nights we all got to that mystical place together, and out of the abyss came a torrent of songs for the album. This method is something sacred to us all; sometimes we arise the next afternoon with full songs written and ready to record, and that's a very special thing to wake up to.”

Adding to the magical journey of the album, the songs Great Escape and Concubine were written in Queenstown while the band were on their album release tour for Bienvenido in 2022. Great Escape being the focus track with the album release - this is a dreamy track with a soaring, hook-laden chorus. Listen to the single Great Escape HERE

The five singles released in the lead up to today’s album have been quick to gain traction on radio, in the NZ Charts and with local media. Cool reached #14 on the Hot NZ Singles Chart; Concubine was quickly added to Radio Hauraki and The Rock and has now charted on the NZ Radio charts five weeks in a row. Make It Better, the first single to be released from Great Escape, debuted at #11 on the NZ Hot 40 Singles Chart and received widespread local media support, including a feature on Rolling Stone Magazine.

No Cigar have quickly risen in the ranks of the New Zealand music industry as a band to watch. After recently releasing their debut album Bienvenido in September 2022, the band have gone on and played at some of New Zealand’s most exciting music festivals and sold out New Zealand and Australian tours over the last summer. The band is just back from touring the northern hemisphere, playing headline shows in the UK and Europe; their London show selling out in less than a day. While across Europe they have sold more than 1000 tickets across four shows. Their track record has amassed over 6 million streams on Spotify alone and gained a monthly listenership of 170,000+ fans.

The continual growth and success of No Cigar is a testament to hard work, exceptional skill and perseverance, with the release of today’s sophomore album being a momentous achievement for the band. “Every step of the way when starting and building a band takes immense sacrifice,” says Willy Ferrier. “Not just from those making or working on the music, but the loved ones around us. We would like to thank the fans for listening, coming to our shows, buying the merch and sharing our music with their friends.

“From the outside in it looks like a wild ride, going from high to high but it takes everything and more, and mostly from those who get the least back from it. You all know who you are, thank you.”
