A few months on from the Australasian release of their debut album Spiel, and with its worldwide release just around the corner, Tāmaki Makaurau/Ōtepoti-based band Office Dog unveil the music video for their highlight song The Crater, directed and edited by Sophie Black and made thanks to the generous support of NZ On Air.
The Crater was shot at the otherworldly Clay Cliffs, in the middle of the South Island, just outside Omarama. "We met there on about 4 hours sleep and trekked all of our gear up into the hills.", front person Kane Strang says. “The funny part is, it is actually an incredibly popular tourist attraction, so as soon as the sun was up, there were bus loads of people rolling through only to find a band playing the same song over and over in the middle of nowhere. In fact, behind almost every shot there was most likely about ten people walking past and taking photos of us.”

Amidst a busy solo career with acclaimed releases via Flying Nun Records and Dead Oceans, Kane Strang formed Office Dog at the end of 2021. After moving from his hometown of Dunedin to Auckland, Kane sought a more collaborative approach with drummer Mitchell Innes and bassist Rassani Tolovaa. Moving between Mitchell’s shed, Rassani & Kane’s residence, and the basement of a nearby church, the trio began writing together. Over the next year, fragments began assembling into songs, ultimately culminating in the creation of their debut album, Spiel.
Office Dog have been on a steady roll since they burst onto the scene in 2022, their songs and album garnering instant airplay and charting success. Tracks such as Big Air and Hand in Hand were playlisted across the Student Radio Network, dominating the #1 spot for multiple weeks on the Radioscope Alternative Charts, while Spiel appeared in the Official New Zealand Music Album Charts post-release in Aotearoa, peaking at #9. The band have received local support from the likes of RNZ, Under The Radar, The 13th Floor and Coup De Main, and international recognition from outlets such as Brooklyn Vegan and Flood Magazine, as well as esteemed U.S label New West Records, now at the helm to release their music worldwide. Their music has been listened to audiences across the world, with listenership in the United States catapulting to new heights after cover features in editorial playlists on DSPs such as Spotify and Apple Music, such as Local Noise (Spotify NZ/AU), Fresh Finds Rock (Spotify U.S), New In Indie (Apple Music U.S) and New Music Daily (Apple Music U.S). They recently claimed the award for Te Rōpū Mariu (Favourite Group) at the Student Radio Network Awards in 2023 and have been announced as the official support for Dinosaur Jr’s upcoming Aotearoa show in 2024. With this and more on the horizon, there is no doubt that Office Dog are on track for big things in 2024 and beyond.
Spiel is OUT NOW in Aotearoa and Australia on CD, black vinyl LP, limited clear vinyl LP and across all digital streaming platforms via Flying Nun Records, and out January 26 2024 everywhere else via New West Records.
