Family Band sign to Sunreturn, release debut single 'Large Dirt Piles'

21 February 2024 - 0 Comments

Sam Shepherd (he/him), Maté Vella (he/him) and Brandee Thorburn (she/her) are Family Band, a gnarly noise group based in Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa.

Formed in 2023 while all three members were flatting together, Family Band take
influence from Chicago noise rock and late 00's Trans-Tasman post-punk.

Today Family Band share Large Dirt Piles, the first single from their debut The Dog Box (out digitally on April 30 via Sunreturn).

Centred by a repetitive rhythm section, Large Dirt Piles builds with squalled disjointed guitar tones and Vella's baritone screams.

"The song itself is about passing generational trauma down your family tree and trying to become the one that stops the cycle," says Vella. "It's become even more prevalent in my life now that I’m becoming a father."

"Large Dirt Piles is the second song we wrote together as a band. Brandee has never played an instrument and wanted to learn, so we booked a show and had to write parts quickly. It's astounding (and quite annoying) how quickly she picked it up."

Large Dirt Piles was recorded, mixed and mastered by Martin Philips (Repairs, God Bows To Math) at The Vault, the now defunct Auckland practice space and venue. Vella notes "It was an absolute dream working with Martin. I can’t express how great he is at making us feel comfortable about the process."

Family Band spent the weekend playing a blistering set at Camp A Low Hum's Renegade Room and will celebrate tonight by supporting Melbourne's Worst Vibes at Whammy Backroom.
