The award-winning, Lyttelton-based artist Mel Parsons has today shared her new single Little Sadness. This is the second track to be released from her forthcoming LP out later this year and comes with a captivating video, made by Tāmaki Makaurau musician and filmmaker Morgan Leary.

Downbeat and hypnotic, Little Sadness captures the melancholic and beautiful juxtaposition of living. Delicate lyricism showcases Parsons' skill for transforming often complex subjects into relatable indie-folk tunes of both light and dark.

“A little bit of struggle is good for the soul,
Scar your hands digging out of the hole,
Scars remind you to stand up tall,
Scars remind you you’re here at all.”

Recorded in Ōhinehou / Lyttelton at Basement Studio, Little Sadness is the second single from a collaboration between Parsons and producer Josh Logan, who share writing duties and between them play all of the instruments on the song.

Accompanying the single is a gorgeous video, conceptualised and directed by Tāmaki Makaurau musician and filmmaker Morgan Leary. Made with the support of Auckland UNESCO City of Music’s EQ Equaliser initiative, the black and white visuals encapsulate a Lynch-esque vibe, filmed in the Hollywood Theatre in Avondale and starring two stunning octogenarian ballroom dancers.

Today’s release is the second single from Parsons’ forthcoming LP, following Offer Down, which was met with massive support from local media. The single featured on RDU, RNZ, Rolling Stone AU/NZ, Newstalk ZB, NZ Herald and more, as well as reaching #12 on the Hot 20 NZ Singles chart upon release.

Parsons’ upcoming record follows on from her fifth and critically-acclaimed album Slow Burn, which debuted at #3 in the Official Top 40 album charts and #2 in the Top 20 NZ album charts. Previous to Slow Burn was the album Glass Heart, which saw her win Best Folk Artist / Te Kaipuoro Taketake Toa at the 2020 Aotearoa Music Awards. Glass Heart was also a finalist for the 2019 Taite Music Prize and Top 20 finalist at 2019’s APRA Silver Scroll Award.
