Don’t Know Vertigo was written with Noema Te Hau as part of Big Fan’s songwriting camp in May last year. The pair gelled together with ease and within a day had the song completed from the writing to the final production.

“This song is about my relationship with a close family member. The feeling of not being deeply heard, but making excuses for them because of the hardship this person has encountered in their life. I wrote Don’t Know Vertigo as an expression for the anxieties and trauma that I hold onto because of the projection of my parent (big feelings). We naturally look up to our parents as they were the ones who raised us, so growing up and realising that they don’t have everything figured out is a pretty strange thing.”

Amber and Noema met through a mutual friend a couple of years ago and in 2023 finally got the chance to work on a song together thanks to Big Fan’s songwriting camp. The two connected and started writing what is now Don’t Know Vertigo, and managed to write and record everything in a single day, with help from Aubrie (another Big Fan producer) who played some piano parts. Apart from this, the two created the whole soundscape themselves, with Amber tracking as many of the instruments she could.

This song is incredibly intimate and vulnerable, as are all of Amber’s songs, but this one has a lot of dreamy elements and a soundscape that beautifully encaptures Amber’s newest sound of simplicity and honesty. This song would fit in a playlist alongside The Japanese House, Ethel Cain and The Paper Kites, amongst other indie/dream-pop artists and bands. An exciting and professional sound for the music scene of Aotearoa that will turn heads and shine a light on the considerable amount of talent in Ōtautahi.

As an independent artist whose music is and has always been fully self-funded, this project has been an experiment for Amber in terms of how much she can do herself with a strict budget. With an extensive amount of experience in releasing music after dropping her EP 21 Roses which required a lot of time and money, Amber has picked up a lot of tools and is willing to go the distance with commitment to independently promoting this song. Recording a live version in her backyard with a stunning setup and editing + mixing it herself, along with creating the cover art and all of the promo, is her big push for being the creative she aspires to be.
