Riqi Harawira (Ngāpuhi, Te Aupōuri, and Te Rarawa descent) is proud to present
his cover of Let's Dance as a tribute to David Bowie's lasting legacy.
The song's pulsating beats carry a poignant commentary on the struggles of
First Nation Australians, a narrative which is often overlooked. Symbolised by
the imagery of red shoes, Let’s Dance highlights how the First Nation
people of Australia have been impacted by racism and continue to face the
consequences of racist government policies and community attitudes. Riqi
Harawira believes that this powerful message deserves to be heard, and he feels
honoured to be able to share it.
Riqi says: "When I first heard ‘Let's Dance’ in 1983, it had a profound impact on me both spiritually and emotionally. The song's message about the struggles of the First Nation Australians deeply resonated with me, inspiring me to pick up the guitar. Now, I am grateful to have reproduced and mastered it in my home studio and perform my own version of this classic. By infusing it with my own energy, speeding up the BPM, adding in some killer guitar, performing the Yidaki and putting my spin on the vocals, it brings me much joy to share it with you."
“The way I live my life has been influenced by both Indigenous and Western cultures through my bicultural parents. I have chosen to embrace both Māori and Pakeha cultures, combining their values and practices to become a more compassionate, racially tolerant, and understanding person. I believe that by blending Western ideals and tools with Indigenous hearts and values, we can create a more harmonious society where all races can collaborate and break down walls between us. It's not just about birth right but a conscious decision to respect and learn from both cultures.”
