SNARE, a New Zealand-born Sāmoan songwriter, seamlessly blends Sāmoan and English in his music. Balancing a 12-hour shift at a goat milk plant in Paerata, he alternates between the isolation required for his day job, focusing on his family and his creative practice during his days off.
Kokonut is his brand-new music and accompanying video release that highlights his creative evolution, cultural influences and experiences.
Collaborating with award-winning producer Anonymouz, they pay Hip Hop and cultural homage to iconic music pioneers, the Sāmoan band, The Five Stars through the sampling of their classic track ‘Coconut’.
Highlighting the enduring significance of the coconut in Pacific culture, SNARE explores the multifaceted uses of the coconut, from sustenance and construction to its symbolic meaning in the community and its traditions. It reframes the term “coconut” from an often-used derogatory term into a celebration of identity, playfully reclaiming its use often used as an insult.
SNARE’s unique sound, artistry and bilingual approach particularly resonate with second- generation migrant audiences like himself, and with its catchy tune and meaningful lyrics, reflects his dedicated approach to create authentic music that is both deeply personal and widely relatable.
