You can catch the Flying Nun Documentary on TV2 this Sunday @ 10:15pm as Hugh Sundae takes a look at the last 21 years of the infamous New Zealand record label Flying Nun.
Interviews and music from artists including The Chills, The Straitjacket Fits, Headless Chickens, Betchadupa & Chris Knox, as well as rare and previously unseen performance and behind the scenes footage chart the stories behind some of New Zealand's most influential bands.
Flying Nun is New Zealand's most successful independent record label. Over the years they have released extraordinary songs that have become the soundtrack to many a New Zealander's life, from Chris Knox's 'Not Given Lightly' to The Chill's 'I Love My Leather Jacket' to The Clean's 'Tally Ho!' But the Flying Nun story isn't a history lesson - currently the label has the most vibrant and active collection of new signings in years - from Liam Finn's Betchadupa to The D4, who are currently making a huge splash in the UK.
Over the years Flying Nun has boasted a number one single and number one album, a Tradenz Award for export sales and 3 songs in APRA's all time top 30 New Zealand songs, plus critical acclaim in the tough UK and American markets.
The Flying Nun story is a tale of excessive antics, dogged determination, unfettered optimism and an extraordinary number of damn fine songs. Through the years of financial woes, bands that disintegrated on the cusp of international success and battles to keep their DIY ethic intact in the face of mountin commercial pressure, Flying Nun kept on producing original, exciting and influential New Zealand muzic. And now it's 21 years old.
