Introducing Spud Rock, the new musical project of Tāmaki Makaurau-based artist Simon Findlay. Spud Rock’s first single, Breathing Softly On My Window, is out today.
Initially conceived as a series of short guitar loops back in 2021 and slowly pieced together over the following years in his spare time, Breathing Softly On My Window finds Findlay conjuring up hazy pastoral landscapes and lamenting lost connections:
“I was thinking at the time about how hard it can be to see beauty in the world when you’re feeling apathetic, and how difficult it is to be earnest and at the same time not fall into clichés. Somehow I ended up with this idea that I should just describe a beautiful day and not shy away from simple images. Everything that came after that felt kind of cathartic.”
Breathing Softly On My Window was mixed by Shannon Fowler (Tom Lark, The Fuzzy Robes) and mastered by James Dansey (The Ruby Suns, The Sneaks).
