Foley drops gritty, emotive summer hit 'Unstable'

Aotearoa’s favourite pop duo Foley have released their emotive, upbeat new single Unstable. It builds on the chart success of their last single Time Of My Life,

Dripping in gritty, fuzzy guitars that sit upon the backbone of a slick pop rhythm section, ‘Unstable’ has a trademark Foley chorus of soaring vocals packed with addictive hooks. Lyrically, the single is about admitting one’s own shortcomings in relationships.

Unstable is about owning your own toxicity,” explains Ash. “It speaks to the way that we can all behave erratically, chaotically, and completely out of order in our relationships - despite having good intentions. This song is about owning your own failures and faults and being grateful that your partner chooses you anyway.”

Produced by Harry Charles (Tate McRae, One Republic), the track was mixed by Hamish Patrick (Gretta Ray, Joji) and mastered by Sam Moses.

“Writing this song was truly cathartic in the sense that we spoke deeply and honestly about our worst tendencies in a relationship, but in the process, we took responsibility for that and moved forward,” says Ash. “It also has a light-hearted tone that helps to package a vulnerable confession into a more jovial and loveable package.”

Today's release is the fourth single to come from Foley in 2024. Their previous single, Time Of My Life has proved a NZ chart success, reaching #3 on the Hot 20 NZ Singles Chart and peaking at #6 on RadioScope’s Most Added Chart. Prior to this were singles Miss You All The Time and Low and High – a release that garnered a huge 100k streams in just three days, as well as landing on Spotify playlists including Pop Sauce, Pop n’ Fresh, chill AF, Happy Pop Hits, New Music Friday’s AU/NZ, Denmark, Netherlands, and UK, New Pop Revolution and many more.

Having released their debut album Crowd Pleaser in 2023, which hit #2 on the Official Top 20 NZ Albums Chart, Foley also established a dynamic reputation as a live unit across Aotearoa prior to the release, touring consistently as headliners and support for artists including Remi Wolf, Tove Lo, Flight Facilities and BENEE.

In the lead-up to their debut album release, Foley secured a coveted digital billboard in Times Square, NYC as part of Spotify’s Equal campaign, as well as enjoying support for the album’s singles, including Killing Me Babe, Smooth It Over and What Got Into You. Crowd Pleaser landed at #2 on the NZ Albums Chart upon its debut, becoming the #1 selling physical record during its release week. At the same time, Foley were making further inroads into the Australian scene, enjoying a successful run at BigSound and SXSW Sydney for 2023; while also completing a sold out nationwide album tour in New Zealand.

This year saw the duo become Aotearoa Music Award nominees (Best Pop Artist) and enjoy a sold-out five-date tour through Los Angeles and New York in April/May. They also found themselves on one of pop culture’s biggest radars when Killing Me Babe was featured on the recent season finale of The Kardashians.

Foley are steadily ramping up the momentum by unveiling more exceptional music; today’s release being no exception. Keep a close eye on them for more to come!
