Emerging artist Carawei is set to release her debut album, The Moon and The Tides today, Wednesday, 6th November, featuring focus track Heart Attack. A powerful and dreamlike exploration of self- discovery, this album explores themes of trauma, and resilience, and truly takes listeners on a sonic journey through both Carawei's personal growth and talent as a musician. Known for her sincere, and experimental approach to music, Carawei weaves together diverse influences to craft a deeply personal soundscape. The result is an album that is as impassioned as it is somber, offering a cathartic experience for listeners.
The Moon and The Tides represents a space for processing and healing from unimaginably difficult life experiences for Carawei, “This album loosely follows the story of coming out, facing trauma and overcoming isolation,” she shares. The project’s roots can be traced to its earliest songs, Lucy and Heart Attack, two tracks that laid the emotional groundwork for the rest of the album. “These were quite vulnerable songs for me to write,” Carawei reflects. Over time, other songs fell into place naturally, completing the narrative Carawei wanted to tell.
The creative process for The Moon and The Tides spanned years, with several tracks developed alongside Carawei’s work with aerial circus company, Dust Palace. “Many of these tracks were written in tandem with my journey with Dust Palace, with songs like Intro, Heart Attack, Still, Sing, and La Vie Est un Spectacle being used in those performances.” The collaboration with Dust Palace culminated in a live performance of the album at Auckland Fringe in 2022, earning awards for Outstanding Music Performance and Outstanding Ensemble.
The focus single on this album Heart Attack serves as the emotional climax of the album, embodying a raw vulnerability that Carawei felt deeply at the time of writing. The song tackles themes of repression and the struggle to express emotion, particularly within certain cultural and societal norms. "I think a lot of people struggle with expressing emotion and vulnerability, especially men," Carawei explains.
She began writing the song in her bedroom shortly after high school, with its haunting guitar riff capturing the weight of repressed memories and unspoken feelings. Over time, the track evolved with the addition of live violin recorded by Tee from Ersha Island, adding a stirring layer to the already poignant composition. Heart Attack remains a deeply intimate piece, staying true to its original demo while expanding into one of the album's most powerful moments.
The album artwork, designed by Carawei herself, captures the album’s abstract and introspective nature. Created as a collage from photos taken around One Tree Hill, where she lived while writing much of the album, the artwork reflects the surreal and unclear qualities that define The Moon and The Tides.
As the release approaches, Carawei expresses a sense of relief. “These songs were made over a very long span of time,” she says, but the final product is one she hopes will resonate deeply with listeners. “I hope people can find themselves as I did. I hope that it can help someone cry or grow. If anything, I hope people can use it as cool background music.”
The Moon and The Tides will be available Wednesday, 6th November via Aotearoa’s independent label, Bigpop Records.
