Young Māori songwriter, producer and engineer Aubrie Mitchell today releases her slick new self-produced single Evergreen.

Incorporating elements of electronica and art-pop, Evergreen cleverly explores expectations around gender roles that society places on relationships.
‘It comments on how women are often expected to be perfect and without fault in order to be perceived as lovable and respectable,” says Aubrie (Ngāti Raukawa). “The song is written in a satirical and mocking tone from the perspective of someone in that position.”
With the track beginning at Aubrie’s home studio and then completed at Big Fan, Evergreen was then mixed by industry heavyweights Jeremie Inahber (Post Malone, Rosalia, Vampire Weekend, Glass Animals) from LA and Chris Gehringer (Dua Lipa, Drake, Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles) at Sterling Sound in New Jersey.
“There’s definitely an experimental element to this song which I think adds to its unique vibe,” says Aubrie. “I wanted it to give off a ‘laid back’ yet ‘in your face’ type of energy, so the lyrics are geared towards a more bitter outlook I have on relationships; the production / songwriting reflects this also.”
Aubrie’s debut single Secret - out less than two months - has already soared to over 36k streams on Spotify and is currently featuring on Fresh Finds, a playlist with over one million followers.
The huge success of her debut makes sense for a multi-talented artist like Aubrie, who has already proved her songwriting and production chops by collaborating with the likes of alayna, Troy Kingi, TEEKS, CHAII and Louis Baker.
The 22-year-old triple threat has been making waves in Auckland’s tight knit music community for some time, working as a producer and engineer at Big Fan for the past 18 months. Prior to Big Fan, Aubrie completed a music degree, majoring in classical theory and music production at Auckland University.
With more in the pipeline for the coming months, Aubrie is poised for a huge career and undoubtedly an artist to have on your radar.
