BodyRock 2002 set to rock Capital City

13 January 2002 - 0 Comments

For the third year in a row, Wellington will be coming alive for the BodyRock showcase, which is a celebration of hip hop culture and performance.

As well as showing off some of the vast local talent currently performing in the public spaces of Aotearoa, showcase organisers Joella (Tweek) and Doug (Swerv) Wright - a husband and wife team who have been involved in hip hop for many years - have also invited international dancers along to inspire local youth and provide them with knowledge about expressing themselves through the art form.

BodyRock has received funding from the Wellington City Council, and is being supported by the Corners Covered Charitable Trust, publishers of Aotearoa's only hip hop magazine Back2Basics.

BodyRock 2002 consists of two separate events. The first is on Friday January 18 at Shed 6 on Wellington's Waterfront from 6.30pm. There will be b-boy and b-girl performances from local crews Angel Allstars, Rock It Up and Quik 'n' Ezy, as well as appearances by American dancers Inayat and Moy. Christchurch hip hoppers Sheelahroc will also perform. Admission price is $10 adults and $5 students.

The second part of BodyRock 2002 takes place the following day (January 19) at Chaffers Park, Wellington from 1.00pm. There is no admission price for the second day, which focuses on the family and crowd participation, with a live performance from funk aficionados the Deville Brothers, Graffiti Productions, three-on-three b-boy battles, open mic spots and live DJs. Inayat and Moy will also be on hand to give tips and share their knowledge and moves.
