Legendary Wellington live music venue Bar Bodega is on the move this week, out of the path of the capital's impending motorway bypass development and into bigger and better new premises.
The long-serving champions of New Zealand music celebrate their 11th birthday in Bodega's current Willis Street site this Thursday 29 August with a performance by regulars The Deville Brothers and the following evening close their doors for good after one last shebang in which punters are challenged to drink the bar dry to musical accompaniment by local band Breakfast Of Champions, The Bats offshoot band Minisnap from Christchurch and long time Bodega favourite Peter Jefferies.
At 1pm on Sunday 1 September, the Bodega bar top will be ceremoniously removed from the old premises and marched down Willis Street to its new home at 101 Ghuznee Street, accompanied by a New Orleans-style brass band, as part of ongoing anti-bypass protest action.
The bar will be bagpiped into the brand new Bar Bodega, which opens the following Friday, 6 September, with a special surprise guest act. Bar Bodega's owner Fraser McInnes promises a bigger, purpose-built Bodega with a brand new soundsystem, and a continuing commitment to grass roots New Zealand music.
