Everyone knows that there is currently more home-grown music being played on the radio and figures recently released by NZ On Air.
In the quarter to June 2002, NZ music content on commercial radio was 14.70% - a best-yet result that contrasts dramatically with the dark days back in 1995 when it was something like 1.9%.
The indications are that the September quarter is on track to better that 14.70%. Rock as a format has been pushing 30%. Easy formats - historically the toughest nut to crack - have been doing something like 16-17% thanks to Bic Runga and Anika Moa, Carly Binding and K'Lee.
Commercial radio should take a bow. That support for NZ music across all commercial radio is giving us unprecedented figures but it's also giving us the healthiest, most vital and vibrant music scene for decades.
